Have you ever wondered about the meaning behind the various decorations that begin appearing close to Christmas? For instance, why is it that people use Christmas trees to celebrate the season? Is there particular symbolism behind all of the Christmas lights? What about the wreaths that appear on people’s doors? Is there anything more than just pretty decorations to all the holly, berries and evergreens? Why is it that poinsettias are used at this time of year? Why do some people and churches light candles in an Advent wreath?
If you have ever been curious about the meaning behind all these decorations that pop up everywhere during December, I encourage you to find out a little bit more by attending a Hanging of the Greens Service. First United Methodist Church in Kosse will explore the meaning behind the decorations at its Hanging of the Greens Service on Sunday, November 29 at the regular 10:45 service.
To explore further the inspiration behind the seasons of Advent and Christmas, you are invited to Dinner and a Movie at Austin’s Restaurant (on highway 7) in Kosse on the first three Wednesday evenings in December at 5:30 PM. New Line Cinema produced a movie about the Holy Family in 2006 called The Nativity Story. It is a realistic retelling of the story of Jesus’ birth and how his birth may have been experienced through Mary’s and Joseph’s eyes. Each week, segments of the movie will be shown and discussed. Participants order and pay for their own dinners. For further information, you may call the church office at 254-375-2426.
