Benefits of group bible study

For centuries, Christians have grown spiritually from studying the Bible together with a group. There are multiple benefits of a group Bible study. The Bible is composed of 66 books that were written by numerous authors over many centuries. To understand the scriptures more fully, it helps to explore information about the author, the original readers, the historical context and Rita’s Reflections the meaning of the original words. The discovery of these backgrounds may be readily gleaned through research on the internet or maybe even from looking at books at a comprehensive library; however, the relevance of these writings become more fully alive when they are discussed with other believers. Furthermore, the meaning and application a scriptural passage has at one point in our lives may take on deeper and greater significance at another point in our lives.

I encourage you to commit to participating in a Bible study group. Kosse First United Methodist Church plans to begin its group Bible study again on Wednesday, September 7 at 5:30 PM. Disciple Fast Track is the study that will be used. It is a new 24-week study that provides a sweeping overview of both the Old and New Testaments with a DVD presentation followed by group discussion of scriptures that have been read the previous week. The Old Testament Study Manual may be purchased through http://www.cokesbury.com/. Those wishing to participate may call the church office at 254-375-2426.

Following god's will

I was recently reading a piece by Evelyn Underhill and was struck by her observations about following God's will:

"St. Paul did not want to be an apostle to the Gentiles.  He wanted to be a clever and appreciated young Jewish scholar...St. Ambrose and St. Augustine did not want to be overworked and worried bishops...St. Francis Xaxier's preference was for an ordered life close to his beloved master, St. Ignatius.  At a few hours' notice he was sent out to be the apostle to the Indies and never returned to Europe again.  In all these, a power beyond themselves decided the direction of life."

Sometimes when we follow God's will, it leads us down a path that is easy and fits our natural inclination.  However, at other times, following God's will may be difficult, uncomfortable and require sacrifices from us.  Jesus acknowledged this when he said, "Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road is easy that leads to destruction, and there are many who take it.  For the gate is narrow and the road is hard that leads to life, and there are few who find it."  (Matthew 7:13-14)  May we continue to be open to God's leading and will for our lives, even when times are not easy.
