Following god's will

I was recently reading a piece by Evelyn Underhill and was struck by her observations about following God's will:

"St. Paul did not want to be an apostle to the Gentiles.  He wanted to be a clever and appreciated young Jewish scholar...St. Ambrose and St. Augustine did not want to be overworked and worried bishops...St. Francis Xaxier's preference was for an ordered life close to his beloved master, St. Ignatius.  At a few hours' notice he was sent out to be the apostle to the Indies and never returned to Europe again.  In all these, a power beyond themselves decided the direction of life."

Sometimes when we follow God's will, it leads us down a path that is easy and fits our natural inclination.  However, at other times, following God's will may be difficult, uncomfortable and require sacrifices from us.  Jesus acknowledged this when he said, "Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road is easy that leads to destruction, and there are many who take it.  For the gate is narrow and the road is hard that leads to life, and there are few who find it."  (Matthew 7:13-14)  May we continue to be open to God's leading and will for our lives, even when times are not easy.
