A magazine on an airplane shared the following quiz. "A three-week study found that people who did this every day were not only happier and more satisfied with life, they got more sleep and felt more refreshed when they woke up. What were they doing?
a. Showering
b. Jumping rope
c. Were served breakfast in bed
d. Keeping a journal of 5 things they were grateful for."
The answer was "d," keeping a journal of 5 things they were grateful for. Gratitude is indeed tied to joy and happiness. David Steindl-Rast, a Catholic Benedictine monk and a contributor to the TED Talks, has said, “It is not joy that makes us grateful, it is gratitude that makes us joyful.” If we want to increase the joy in our lives, we count our blessings. The Apostle Paul pairs joy with thanksgiving in Colossians 1:11, “May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light.”
We continue our look at being open to joy in life in the Sermon Series, "Joy in July." This Sunday, we explore "Joy in Others," then we will consider "Joy in Variety" and "Joy in Fun." On the final day of the sermon series, we have a day of fun as we celebrate Hat Day and where our favorite hats! Join us in worship and joy at 10:45 AM this Sunday!
