Living a Life of Love by Pastor Rita Sims

We hear it at weddings and yet we sometimes forget about it the rest of the time. That is, the famous love chapter in I Corinthians 13: “Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.”
Sadly, sometimes couples after the warm, fuzzy feeling has worn off after the wedding, forget about these words too. The Apostle Paul wrote these words to the Christians at Corinth because they were having a hard time getting along. He wanted to encourage them to live a life of love. The Greek word that is used for love in this chapter is agape, which means godly love. In other words, this is the kind of love that God has and we are called upon to have this kind of love as well.
Notice that the words are written in the present tense, that is, “love is patient and kind.” It is a reminder that love is something that we do continually, not just occasionally or whenever we feel especially generous.
The next few weeks, I will be looking at the words in this portion of I Corinthians 13 at worship to remind us how God would have us to live in our families, jobs, churches and even when we are shopping! Join us for worship on Sundays at 10:45 at Kosse as we are guided by the love chapter written by the Apostle Paul.
