Mother's Day is approaching, which makes me think of the mothers mentioned in the Bible and their relationships with their children. One such mother was Jesus' mother, Mary. Mel Gibson's movie The Passion of the Christ highlights the special relationship that Jesus had with his mother.
Mary was willing to suffer misunderstanding and the pressure of raising a son called to be the Savior of the world. There were times that Mary pondered the surprising happenings of Jesus' life. On one occasion, she was concerned that Jesus' ministry had taken a wrong turn. Ultimately, she witnessed her son's crucifixion. Clearly, their relationship with one another was prized and a source of strength to them both.
On Mother's Day on Sunday, May 13, we will explore Jesus' connection with his mother and how it may inform our relationships with our children and our mothers. In addition, at worship, each woman will be given a flower in honor of this day of celebration of mothers.
